Most Americans have never seen the Milky Way. 80% of the population lives under light-polluted skies. The good news: the National Park Service has been certifying Dark Sky Parks since 2007, and the best of them have skies as dark as anywhere on the continent. Here's how to use them.
The dark sky parks worth driving for
- Death Valley NP — Gold-tier dark sky, 3.4 million acres of nothing, one of the best in the world
- Big Bend NP, TX — remote, low humidity, exceptional
- Joshua Tree NP — accessible from LA, Milky Way visible to the naked eye
- Capitol Reef NP, UT — high desert clarity
- Bryce Canyon NP, UT — 8,000+ ft elevation reduces atmospheric interference
- Cherry Springs SP, PA — best dark sky in the eastern US
- Glacier NP, MT — northern latitude, less light pollution from any direction
Timing
- Moon phase matters more than weather. A full moon washes out the Milky Way. Aim for new moon ± 5 days.
- Milky Way core season: April-September in the northern hemisphere; rising 10pm in spring, midnight in summer
- Best viewing window: 1-3 hours after astronomical twilight ends (true dark)
- Aurora: northern parks (Glacier, Voyageurs, Acadia, Olympic) during high solar activity
What to bring
- Red headlamp (preserves night vision)
- Sleeping pad or chair (you'll be lying or sitting still for hours)
- Warm layers (desert nights drop fast)
- Star chart or app (Stellarium, Sky Guide)
- Hot drink in a thermos
- Camera + tripod if you want astrophotography
Eye adaptation
It takes 20-30 minutes for your eyes to fully adapt to dark. White headlamp blast at any moment resets it. Use red light only after dark.
What you'll see
- Milky Way core (looks like a cloud across the sky)
- Andromeda Galaxy (visible to naked eye in dark sites)
- Multiple satellites in low orbit
- Meteors (any dark night yields 1-3 per hour; meteor showers yield 30+/hour)
- Planets at various positions
The Milky Way isn't blue or purple. It's white-grey with subtle bands of dark dust lanes. Photos enhance the color you don't actually see — so don't expect Instagram colors. The naked-eye experience is more subtle and more humbling.
