A weekend in Rocky Mountain National Park

Home News A weekend in Rocky Mountain National Park

Rocky Mountain National Park is the most accessible alpine park in America — Trail Ridge Road tops out at 12,183 feet and you reach genuine tundra in 90 minutes from Denver. A weekend covers the essentials.

Day 1 — Trail Ridge Road end to end

Drive Trail Ridge from Estes Park (east) to Grand Lake (west) — 48 miles, 4 hours with stops. Stops: Many Parks Curve, Forest Canyon, Rock Cut, the Alpine Visitor Center (12,005 ft, alpine meadows visible from the parking lot). The road is open late May to mid-October weather permitting.

Day 2 — Bear Lake and the alpine bowls

The most popular trailhead in the park. Three classic dayhikes:

  • Emerald Lake (3.6 miles round-trip, easy-moderate). Stair-stepping glacial lakes.
  • Sky Pond (9 miles round-trip, strenuous). One of the most cinematic alpine cirques in Colorado, finishing with a 200-ft scramble up Timberline Falls.
  • Mills Lake (5.6 miles round-trip, moderate). Quiet alternative.

Get to the Bear Lake parking by 6am or use the park-and-ride shuttle.

Day 3 — Wild Basin or home

Wild Basin in the southeast corner is RMNP's quieter side. Hike to Calypso Cascades, Ouzel Falls, or all the way to Bluebird Lake (12 miles, big day).

What to pack

  • Layers — alpine summer means 28°F nights, 70°F afternoons
  • Hard-shell rain jacket — afternoon thunderstorms are nearly daily
  • 3L hydration + filter
  • Hiking boots
  • Trekking poles for the alpine descent
  • Sun hoodie + brimmed hat (UV is brutal at altitude)
RMNP is the park where altitude sickness shows up uninvited. Drink heavily, climb gradually, descend if you feel headachy.

Logistics

Timed-entry permits required May-October. Estes Park is the gateway; book lodging 4-6 months out. Camping at Moraine Park or Aspenglen.
