Field guide ◆ Arches

Plan the trip.

Arches National Park contains over 2,000 documented natural sandstone arches in an area of 76,000 acres — the most concentrated arch density anywhere on earth. Geology is the headline: 300 million years of sediment, salt, uplift, and weather creating the conditions for thin walls and freeze-thaw spalling that produce the openings.

For a focused day: Park Avenue at sunrise, then drive to Delicate Arch and hike the 3-mile round trip (the iconic shot, the one on Utah license plates). Visit Windows Section in the afternoon. Sunset at Devil's Garden and a moonrise at Balanced Rock if you have the energy.

Timed entry permits required April-October — book on recreation.gov ahead. The town of Moab is the gateway; combine with Canyonlands National Park (15 minutes away) for a 3-day Utah desert circuit.
