Niagara Falls ◆ New York / Ontario

Niagara Falls, the volume.

Not the tallest waterfall in the world. But by volume, the most powerful in North America — 750,000 gallons per second over the brink.

Field guide ◆ Niagara Falls

Plan the trip.

Niagara Falls is not the tallest waterfall in the world, or even in North America. What it is: the most powerful waterfall in North America by volume — 750,000 gallons per second going over the Horseshoe Falls brink during peak flow. The American side and the Canadian side of the falls offer wildly different experiences. The Canadian side has the panoramic view; the American side puts you closer to the water.

For a long weekend: Spend day 1 on the American side (Niagara Falls State Park, the oldest state park in the country). Walk Goat Island, take the Maid of the Mist boat (1 hour). Day 2, cross to the Canadian side (passport required) for the Horseshoe view, the Journey Behind the Falls, and the Skylon Tower at sunset.

Best window: April through October for full water flow. Winter freezes parts of the American Falls into ice formations — striking but obviously colder. Summer weekends are very crowded; weekdays in May or September are ideal.
