Field guide ◆ Shoshone Falls

Plan the trip.

Shoshone Falls is 212 feet tall and 900 feet wide on the Snake River near Twin Falls, Idaho — taller than Niagara Falls (167 feet), and called the 'Niagara of the West.' It's a year-round attraction but spring runoff (April through June) is when the falls reach their full volume; in late summer the river is heavily diverted upstream for irrigation and the falls dwindle.

For a half-day visit: enter Shoshone Falls Park (Twin Falls County), pay the small day-use fee, walk to the rim overlooks. Hike the trail downstream to Dierkes Lake. Combine with the BASE-jumping launch at the Perrine Bridge (visible nearby) and the Snake River Canyon scenic drive.

Best window: April-June for water volume. Pair with Craters of the Moon National Monument (2 hours northeast) for a strange Idaho geological double-header.

Best seasonApril to June (peak), year-round (always visible)
