Southern Utah is one of the densest concentrations of cinematic landscape in the country. Five parks within a 4-hour drive: Zion, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Arches, Canyonlands. A 5-day Bryce-Arches loop hits the two most photogenic without rushing.
Day 1 — Drive to Bryce
Fly into Las Vegas, drive 4 hours to Bryce Canyon. Check into Sunset Campground or lodging in Bryce Canyon City. Drive the rim road in the afternoon, stop at Sunrise Point and Sunset Point. Sunset at Bryce Point.
Day 2 — Bryce hike day
Sunrise at Sunrise Point (the name tracks). Hike the Navajo-Queen's Garden combination loop (2.9 miles, descending into the amphitheater) — the most-recommended dayhike in the park. Drive the rest of the rim, stop at Inspiration Point and Bryce Point. Optional second hike: Fairyland Loop (8 miles, longer and quieter).
Day 3 — Drive Bryce to Arches
4-hour drive across southern Utah via Capitol Reef. Stop at Capitol Reef's Petroglyph Panel and the Hickman Bridge trail (2 miles round-trip) for a scenic break. Continue to Moab. Check in.
Day 4 — Arches
Sunrise at Park Avenue. Drive to Delicate Arch and hike the 3-mile round trip. Spend the afternoon at the Windows Section and Devil's Garden. Sunset at Balanced Rock or Sand Dune Arch.
Note: Arches has timed-entry permits April-October. Book ahead.
Day 5 — Canyonlands or fly home
If you have the time, add Canyonlands Island in the Sky (15 minutes from Moab) — Mesa Arch at sunrise is one of the most-photographed shots in the park system. Or drive back to Las Vegas (6 hours) and fly home.
What to pack
- 3L hydration + filter (red rock heat is dehydrating)
- Sun protection — full coverage
- Hiking shoes with good rubber on slickrock
- Headlamp for sunrise hikes
- Layers — Bryce sits at 8,500-9,000 ft and is cold; Arches at 4,000 ft and warmer
The Mighty 5 is a single road trip. Two parks at a time is the right depth. Five parks in five days is a cardiac event.
Utah desert kit: hydration, tables and chairs. Plan: Bryce, Arches.
